Choose the CCTV arrangement you actually need
| Package | What it is designed to cover | How it is charged |
|---|---|---|
| Supply & installation | A site survey; agreed cameras, recorder and storage; cabling, mounting, configuration and handover. The quotation lists the equipment and works. | One-off equipment and installation quotation. |
| Connected self-viewing | A suitable installed system with authorised remote phone or computer access. Client users view footage themselves. | Equipment/setup charges; optional maintenance. Client internet and any cloud subscriptions are separate unless included. |
| Central monitoring | A separately agreed operator service for compatible cameras, with specified monitoring hours or event rules, escalation contacts and reporting. Activation follows a connectivity and service assessment. | Quoted setup and recurring monitoring fee; response and on-site attendance are included only if expressly agreed. |
Recording, remote access and live operator monitoring are different functions. Having cameras or a phone app does not by itself include somebody watching the feed or attending the premises.
What a useful camera plan should address
Coverage & image quality
Prioritise entrances, access routes, parking, reception and agreed high-risk areas. Camera placement, lighting, resolution and night performance should match the task.
Recording & retention
Choose storage capacity around camera count, quality, frame rate and the retention period justified for the site. Confirm local recording, export and any optional cloud costs.
Internet, Wi-Fi & power
Remote services need stable internet with suitable upload capacity and secure configuration. Wi-Fi alone is not an internet connection. Assess wired connectivity, power backup and outage procedures.
Alerts & authorised access
Supported detection features can help flag events, but performance varies with equipment and conditions. Agree user permissions, strong credentials, access review and who receives an alert.
Smart detection, number-plate features, cloud storage and other advanced options are equipment-dependent. Facial recognition is not a standard package feature and would require a separate necessity, privacy and compliance assessment.
What we need before a site survey
- Property location, type of premises and the areas you need covered.
- Any existing camera makes, model numbers, recorder and storage details.
- Power availability, internet service and approximate upload performance, where known.
- Whether you need recording, self-viewing, central monitoring or a combination.
- Authorised decision-maker and your access, signage, retention and privacy requirements.
Do not send camera passwords, live-feed links or router credentials in a general enquiry. Technical access is arranged securely after authorisation.
What affects installation and monitoring cost?
The quotation separates hardware and installation from ongoing monitoring or support, so the initial price is not confused with a recurring service.
| Item | Points to confirm |
|---|---|
| Cameras & recording | Camera count, lens and night capability, recorder, storage and the named equipment models. |
| Installation | Cabling length, mounting, civil works, networking, power protection and access equipment. |
| Remote services | Connectivity assessment, monitoring coverage hours, escalation, account setup and monthly fees. |
| Ongoing support | Maintenance visits, fault reporting, warranty terms, cloud charges and replacement exclusions. |
Client internet, mobile data and power costs are excluded unless the written offer expressly includes them. Camera packages and monitoring rates are quoted around the agreed site scope.
How the assignment is arranged
-
Assess & design
Agree the areas to cover, privacy constraints, storage, connectivity and package.
-
Install & hand over
Fit and configure the agreed equipment, check views, control access and explain normal use.
-
Activate the service
Test remote access or monitoring, agree escalation contacts, coverage hours, outage handling and review arrangements.
Installation, activation and outages
The installation schedule depends on the site, equipment supply and required works. Central monitoring begins only after connectivity, permissions, contacts and service arrangements are confirmed.
Internet loss can interrupt remote access. Power loss can affect cameras and recording unless suitable backup is provided. The scope should state how faults are detected, who is notified and what remains operational.
Questions before you book
Can you use cameras I already own?
An existing system can be assessed for compatibility, condition, credentials, recording, connectivity and monitoring access. Reconfiguration or replacement may be needed and is quoted separately.
Do I need Wi-Fi for CCTV monitoring?
Remote access needs a suitable internet connection. Cameras may use wired networking rather than Wi-Fi. A survey should check reliable upload capacity, system compatibility and the way authorised access will be secured.
Is central monitoring automatically 24/7?
No. Monitoring hours, camera coverage, event rules and operator responsibilities are defined in the contract. Continuous live viewing is not implied by a general monitoring package.
Will someone attend my property after an alert?
Only if an attendance or response arrangement has been expressly agreed. The monitoring plan identifies contacts and escalation steps, and should state what happens if a contact cannot be reached.
What privacy rules should a CCTV owner consider?
Identify a lawful purpose, proportionate coverage, appropriate notices, controlled access and a justified retention period. ODPC guidance identifies private security and security CCTV operations among the activities subject to mandatory registration requirements. Confirm the roles and obligations that apply to the installation.
